What is the Phlebotomy program?
The Phlebotomy (PLAB) program prepares Health Science professionals to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. The course covers vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood cultures, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. An emphasis is placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. Additional topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology.
What will I learn?
Phlebotomy (PLAB) courses prepare Health Science professionals to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. The courses cover vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood cultures, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. An emphasis is placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. Additional topics include professionalism, ethics, technical calculations, and medical terminology. In summary, students will learn how to identify patients via identification, medical records, or other means, draw blood or perform venipuncture using needles and other equipment. How to label samples correctly and process them for testing.

The Phlebotomy (PLAB) program prepares Health Science professionals to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions.
Upon successful completion of all six courses, and graduation with a grade of "C' or better and obtaining a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures, over the course of 120 hours in clinical rotation attendance, allows a student to take the national certification examination: Phlebotomy Technician/PBT through ASCP.
